After a successful start in
agility with Živa, I began to think about a dog that would show at least
as much enthusiasm for the work as I did. First I gathered information
about Hungarian sheepdogs, specially Mudi, as I wanted to compete in
category medium with a new dog too. But soon I realized, that it would
be quite difficult to get a good dog of this breed. So I quickly changed
my mind when I found out about Cita's puppies and arranged with Alen to
take a female pup from that litter. Cita (Drava
Certisa) really made a strong impression on me with her speed,
agility, enthusiasm and devotion, so I thought this was a great
opportunity to get a good working dog. But after a second thought and
consultation I decided that it was to early for a new dog. I stood by
this decision until after the competition in Varaždin, when I saw 9
weeks old pups. Because one male pup was still available, I quickly
forgot all the good reasons against the purchase and decided for the pup
with the tail that was, as Alen sad it, the most self-confident pup in
the litter.
So Grom is
Croatian sheepdog
from kennel
Mawlch.
He was born on 9th of April 2004. He was hard working and serious pup
and his drive for work just grew with time. He would do anything for a
"prey" and it doesn't matter if it's a ball, a stick, a squeaking toy or
a piece of rope. As a true son of his mother Cita he really likes to
bark when he gets excited, which he does readily. He's loud and alert
watchdog. He doesn't like other dogs and treats every big dog as an
enemy until he or she proves it otherwise. His act toward strange people
and dogs is very convincing despite the fact that he's a medium sized
dog with his 20,5 in at the withers.
He learns new things
quickly and eagerly. Actually a lot of things he learned so by the way
that I couldn't really describe when and how we managed. But he also
gets very excited very quickly, to the point when he's no longer capable
of cooperation and following directions. Because I was totally
unprepared for such a dog and was even impressed with his behavior in
the beginning I even encouraged this excitability of his instead of
encouraging the self-control. This shows the most in our favorite
activity - agility, where we're the least successful because of that. It
took me very long time to figure out what is our problem and in the mean
time I almost gave up on agility (that was when the video
AGILITY BLOOPERS was made). Since we daily practice exercises for
calming and self-control there is a big progress in out relationship and
cooperation.
Besides agility the dogfrisbee is one of our favorites. We also do
rally obedience and "classical" obedience. With two
and a half years Grom passed the BH test (a test for a companion dog
with a test of the behavior in an urban environment) with excellent
scores. HERE you can read
more about our activities.
Grom is also officially
good looking.
